Create File Shortcuts on Your Windows 8 Start Screen
You don't have to go to your desktop to directly access your files.  You can add links for your files or folders to the Start Screen.  A simple click and you can open the file or go to the file directory to see your files.

With a little organization of your Start Screen, these shortcut tiles can be right next to the program they are associated with.
